Lighthouse: Taster Venture

E-mail Print PDF

Welcome to Pinewood School, in Bourton, near Swindon!

Wide shot of school

This fantastic site is the home of Lighthouse Ventures.  The Taster runs for 4 nights (in 2010 these were Monday 2 August to Friday 6 August).  If you will be aged 8 to 11 in the summer of 2011 (that is, if you will have just finished any of school years 3 to 6), you could be joining us!  The full cost of Lighthouse:  Bourton Taster in 2010 was £125; if that sounds prohibitive, there is a central ventures subsidy fund (see here) and many churches will make a contribution to enable their young members to attend a venture.  More information about the 2011 season will be published on this website as it becomes available.

Life at Lighthouse Taster

E-mail Print PDF

You'll sleep in a dorm with between 5 and 7 other children, and two or three leaders. We all eat together in a big dining room and we have a fantastic team of cooks who feed us really well. A normal day is structured something like this:

  • Breakfast is at about 8.30am
  • Searchlight - a bible study in your dorm group
  • One of our fun activities
  • An optional swim (or just choose to have a rest!)
  • Lunch
  • Free time with a tuckshop and bookstall and more
  • Two more fun activities
  • Dinner
  • Spotlight (the big celebration)
  • Time to chat (and drink Hot Chocolate!), then bed

We go to bed at about 9pm. If you're really tired you can always go to bed straight after Lighthouse (about 45 minutes earlier). Some days are slightly different, but we always let you know the full programme in detail as soon as you arrive at Lighthouse so you know what's happening when!

What if I've never been away from home before?

E-mail Print PDF

We have been running ventures for many years now, and we know that some people feel a bit worried about being away from home. This is one of the main reasons we run the Taster holiday! It is slightly shorter and means that you don't need to commit yourself to a full week the first time you try a holiday without your family. Whichever holiday you choose, all the leaders have your happiness and safety as their first concern, and we are always happy to talk with you or your parents or carers before the holiday if that would help you feel more confident about coming. And we continue to look out for you whilst you're with us as well. We have lots of leaders just so that there will always be someone who you can talk to if you're feeling a bit homesick. If you have any questions or worries at all, just use the contact page to ask us!
